Reasons Your Car Hesitates When Accelerating

Why does your car hesitate when you accelerate? Here are some common reasons for your vehicle hesitating as you pick up speed:

  • Fuel Pump: The fuel pump is in charge of making sure that a specific amount of fuel is delivered to the engine for combustion. However, when your fuel pump doesn’t work efficiently, then the correct amount of fuel doesn’t get sent to the engine, which can lead to your vehicle hesitating as you accelerate.
  • Throttle Position Sensor: Your vehicle’s throttle position sensors are responsible for indicating to the main computer where to position the throttle and how much pressure is put on the accelerator. The main computer then takes this information and uses it to adjust the fuel and air mixture to the proper level before they enter the engine. A broken throttle position sensor will send incorrect information to the computer, which can lead to your vehicle hesitating as you accelerate.
  • Fuel Injectors: The fuel injector sprays fuel into the internal combustion chamber, but overtime, your fuel injector can become clogged with debris or worn out. This can lead to your Chevy truck losing power when accelerating or hesitating as you pick up speed.
  • Fuel Filter: To prevent them from getting mixed in with the engine fuel, dirt, dust, and other debris are collected with the fuel filter. However, your fuel filter can become clogged with debris with more use, which can lead to a not working as efficiently. This can cause your vehicle to hesitate as you accelerate.
  • Mass Airflow Sensor: The mass airflow sensors determine how much air should be going to the engine and then tells this information to your main computer. The main computer then takes this information and tells the fuel injectors how much fuel to send to the engine. When your mass airflow sensors malfunction, it can lead to serious engine problems as well as your vehicle hesitating as you accelerate.

Potential Transmission Problems

If the reason your Chevy truck is losing power when accelerating isn’t due to any of the issues mentioned above, then another problem could be your vehicle’s transmission. Transmissions that are electronically controlled can develop the same kinds of issues with sensors and actuators that combustion engines can. If your car hesitates when accelerating, then it could indicate that the transmission clutch is slipping. Your transmission slipping can be the result of low or old transmission fluid. Other issues related to your transmission could be an old transmission oil pump, damaged clutches, or clutch solenoid failure.

Whatever the reason may be, if your car is hesitating when you pick up speed on the La Crosse road, then schedule service with us right away. We’ll find out what’s wrong with your vehicle and determine what needs to be serviced immediately.
