How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change
Transmission fluid is necessary in any vehicle with an internal combustion engine. It contributes to seamless gear shifting and moves heat away from the transmission and other engine parts, which prevents untimely wear and tear. So how often do you check your transmission fluid? What do you need to know about how to check transmission fluid properly? Review the following guide from Morrie's Onalaska Chevrolet to learn more about your vehicle and help it run smoothly on roads in Sparta and the surrounding areas.

How to Check Transmission Fluid: A Step-by-Step Guide

Review how to check transmission fluid quickly and easily:

  1. Turn the Engine On: Start your vehicle and let the engine run for a few minutes. The auto part must be warm for an accurate transmission fluid reading. Make certain the car is in park, then open the vehicle’s hood.
  2. Find the Transmission Dipstick: Locate this dipstick, which is usually to the right of the oil dipstick on front-wheel-drive cars. Refer to your owner’s manual if you cannot find it.
  3. Touch the Transmission Fluid: Remove the dipstick and let some of the fluid move between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be pretty clear with a pinkish tint. If it looks dirty and or features a burnt odor, contact our service department to schedule transmission fluid replacement services.
  4. Wipe Off the Dipstick: Wipe down the dipstick with a clean rag, then place it back in its holder. Pull the dipstick out again and observe the fluid level. If it is under the ‘Full’ mark on the dipstick, add more fluid using a funnel. Be careful not to overfill the container to avoid transmission saturation issues such as slow gear shifting, seal failure, part pitting, and high internal temperatures.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Check your transmission fluid level about once a month and add more fluid as needed. Replace the fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles and keep factors such as your vehicle make and model, and how often you drive in Onalaska and the nearby communities in mind. Schedule a fluid change if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Odd noises during gear changes
  • Gear hesitation before changing
  • A gear shift delay when you accelerate

Transmission fluid differs by transmission type (automatic and manual). The type of vehicle you drive also determines what transmission fluid you need–check your owner’s manual if you are not sure.
